ST’s New 3A Isolated Gate Driver Family Simplifies SiC and IGBT Power Design

STMicroelectronics has expanded its STGAP3S isolated gate driver portfolio with 3A output‑current options – the STGAP3S3S (optimized for SiC MOSFETs) and STGAP3S3IF (for IGBTs). The full series supports 1200V bus voltage, targeting PFC, SMPS, DC‑DC converters, and inverters for solar, storage, EV charging, industrial forklifts, and motor drives.

All devices hold UL 1577 and IEC 60747‑17 safety certifications. ST’s enhanced isolation technology delivers 9.6kV surge immunity and 200V/ns CMTI, ensuring reliable operation in harsh high‑voltage environments.

The family now spans three current grades – 10A, 6A, and the new 3A – each available in IGBT‑ and SiC‑tuned variants. The 3A STGAP3S3 series integrates an active Miller clamp MOSFET inside, saving external components, reducing PCB space, and cutting BOM – while maintaining stable clamping even at 3A drive current. The 6A and 10A versions (STGAP3S6, STGAP3SX) include pre‑drivers only, allowing external MOSFETs for flexible clamp‑response tuning in high‑current designs.

All models feature desaturation detection and soft shutdown to protect power switches during overcurrent or short‑circuit faults. The 6A, 10A, and SiC‑targeted 3A parts allow external resistor adjustment for soft‑shutdown slew‑rate control. Dedicated diagnostic pins report desat, UVLO, and thermal‑shutdown status. Negative gate voltage support further suppresses parasitic turn‑on and reduces ringing.

Two half‑bridge evaluation boards – EVLSTGAP3S3S and EVLSTGAP3S3IF – come with pre‑set protections, test points, and status LEDs for quick prototyping. The entire STGAP3S series, including 3A, 6A, and 10A grades, is now in mass production in the SO16W wide‑body package.
